A $4.7M Tourism District Restroom renovation project, which commenced in October, 2020, is now completed and will be open to the public beginning Friday, May 14, 2021, announced the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA).
The newly renovated Boardwalk restrooms include 7 comfort stations located at Chelsea Avenue (2,675 sf), Mississippi Avenue (2,040 sf), Caspian Avenue (375 sf), Albany Avenue (485 sf), Bartram Avenue (708 sf), New Hampshire Avenue (120 sf) and New York Avenue (2,675 sf).
“The CRDA is proud to see this project come to fruition,” said CRDA Board Chairman Robert Mulcahy. “It is money well spent on improvements within the Tourism District and modernizes the Atlantic City Boardwalk.”
Renovations included gutting the existing interior and replacing toilets, urinals, fixtures, faucets, installing new heating, plumbing and ventilation systems. The design features tile floors and walls that provide a visual accent tying finishes back to the Boardwalk. Toilets, faucets, soap dispensers and hand dryers are now touchless. All surfaces are constructed with easy-to-clean materials which can be used with our current Kyvak cleaning system.
“As a tourist destination, we realize the importance of having clean restrooms and providing a higher standard for visitors and their families,” said CRDA Executive Director Matt Doherty. “These improvements greatly increase the Atlantic City tourism experience.”
The Mississippi Avenue restroom is of historic significance and involved working with New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office. The renovations used a slightly different color palette while keeping true to the historic vaulted ceiling and limestone features that will continue to showcase how the original building looked when constructed. Of historical significance at Mississippi Avenue is the usage of the Guastavino tile arch system, a technique for constructing robust, self-supporting arches and architectural vaults using interlocking terracotta tiles and layers of mortar to form a thin skin, with the tiles following the curve of the roof. The architectural design for this historic building blends the past with the present.

The “Big Three” are open year-round:
New York Avenue - Mississippi Avenue - Chelsea Avenue
May 1 - September 30 from 7:00am until 9:30pm
October1 - April 30 from 7:00am until 7:00pm
Seasonal restrooms:
Caspian Avenue - New Hampshire Avenue - Albany Avenue - Bartram Avenue
May 21 - September 30 from 7:00am - 7:00pm
The seasonal restrooms are then closed and winterized. Certain restroom hours may be extended during special events.
A small ribbon cutting is planned on Friday, May 14, 2021 at 11:30 am at the Mississippi Avenue Restroom on the Atlantic City Boardwalk and is open to the public.
