The Boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ – the great granddaddy of all boardwalks, dating from 1870 – is at the top of the list of the “10 Top American Boardwalks,” according to ForbesTraveler.com. Earlier this year, ForbesTraveler.com listed Atlantic City as one of the top golf destinations in the U.S.

In a posting this week, the well-respected travel authority notes that, “For the majority of the 20th century it served as a stage for the latest inventions and oddities.” It also makes note of the Boardwalk’s premier summer event, the Atlantic City Airshow, Thunder Over the Boardwalk, which this week set a new attendance record of an estimated 750,000 visitors.

“When you read the narrative, you can see that the editors put a lot of thought and reasoning into their picks,” said Jeff Vasser, president of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority. “We’re proud of our Boardwalk, its history and all it has to offer today, and we’re pleased to see our name at the top of a prestigious and deserving list. We get feedback all the time from visitors who are amazed at the variety they find when they visit.”

The Atlantic City Boardwalk – always capitalized, because it is a legal street – began as a temporary structure to keep sand out of the hotels. Today, it is a vibrant collage of shops, casinos, restaurants and attractions, and provides access to the city’s vast beach and beach bars.

The ForebsTraveler.com “10 Top American Boardwalk” rankings, in order, are: Atlantic City, NJ; Wildwood, NJ; Bethany Beach, DE; Rehoboth Beach, DE; Virginia Beach, VA; Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY; Venice Beach, CA; Long Beach, WA; Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston Bay, TX; and Santa Cruz, CA.
