Although a short drive from Atlantic City, Batsto Village seems a century or two removed from the Jersey Shore. With 33 historic buildings and structures on site, the Batsto Village of the 21st century offers a welcome reminder of its heyday as a bog iron and glassmaking industrial center from 1766 to 1867.
The attractions of Batsto Village, New Jersey preserve, re-create and celebrate the area’s past. Batsto Village highlights include a general store, gristmill, sawmill, stone horse barn and other farm buildings, a blacksmith’s shop and a part-time post office, where the envelopes are still hand-cancelled. A Methodist church dating back to 1808 stands next to the historic New Jersey village. Batsto Village, New Jersey is also home to a visitor center and museum as well as the Batsto Mansion, which opens 14 of its 32 rooms for public tours.
Batsto Village hosts a number of special events and activities throughout the year, such as monthly hikes, star watches and The Country Living Fair in October. During the summer months, the Batsto Village nature center offers guided canoe tours on Batsto Lake.
Batsto Village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located in Wharton State Forest, a part of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.
